Why Mix the Hindered Phenols Antioxidant with Phosphite?

Synergistic Protection: Hindered phenols are primary antioxidants that excel at inhibiting the initial stages of oxidation. They scavenge free radicals that can initiate polymer degradation. However, they are less effective at preventing later stages of oxidation. Phosphites, on the other hand, are secondary antioxidants that effectively inhibit the propagation of oxidation. When combined, these two types of antioxidant additives for plastics work together to provide comprehensive protection against oxidation, offering a greater level of stability.

Extended Longevity: By combining hindered phenols with phosphites, the polymer's protection against oxidation is not limited to one specific stage. This comprehensive approach extends the lifespan of the polymer, ensuring that it maintains its properties and performance over an extended period.

Improved Processing Stability: HPAO / Phosphite blends not only protect polymers from oxidation but also enhance their processing stability. This means that the polymer can be processed more efficiently and with fewer issues like melt fracture or color change during manufacturing.

Versatility: The blending ratio of HPAO and phosphite can be adjusted to meet specific requirements for different types of polymers and applications. This adaptability makes it a versatile solution for various industries.

Hindered Phenol Antioxidant HPAO

Oxidation of polymers can lead to many undesirable effects including color changes, formation of rough surface morphology, changes in melt viscosity and reduction in mechanical properties, which can affect the service life of the polymer or the final product. Oxidation can occur at every stage of the polymer life cycle, during the production and storage of polymer resins, during high temperature melt processing operations, during the processing of resins into articles, and during the use of the articles. In addition, exposure to UV rays from sunlight also accelerates the oxidation process. Adding synthetic phenolic antioxidants for polymers can inhibit and delay the oxidation and degradation of polymer materials.

Antioxidants are generally divided into primary antioxidants and secondary antioxidants. Primary phenolic acid antioxidant work by scavenging peroxy free radicals formed during oxidation. The two main classes of primary antioxidants are hindered phenol antioxidants and aromatic amines. They are effective over a wide temperature range, improving material processing and long-term thermal stability.

Secondary antioxidants, such as phosphites and thioethers, work through the decomposition of hydroperoxides. Phosphites are most effective at the high temperatures of melt processing operations, while thioethers work best in the solid phase at long-term use temperatures.

TINTOLL hindered phenolic antioxidants for polymers have low volatility, high efficiency, resistance to air fading and hydrolysis, and can be implemented in a wide range of applications.

Hindered Phenol Antioxidant HPAO Details

Hindered phenol stabilizers are the main antioxidant additives for plastics and act as hydrogen donors. They react with peroxy radicals to form hydroperoxides and prevent abstraction of hydrogen from the polymer backbone. Phenolic stabilizers are often used in combination with secondary antioxidants and come in a variety of molecular weights, product forms and functions. They are very effective during processing and long-term heat aging, and many are FDA-approved. These polymer stabilizers are generally less prone to staining or discoloration. However, they may form quinoid structures when oxidized, resulting in yellowing. PowerNoxTM hindered phenol antioxidant mechanism include simple phenols, bisphenols, polyphenols and thiobisphenols.

PowerNoxTM 2640 (BHT) is the most commonly used primary antioxidant and is FDA-approved for food contact and is suitable as a long-term stabilizer in almost all cases. However, BHT is a relatively volatile material that is gradually being replaced by higher molecular weight antioxidants that resist migration.

Thiobisphenols also act as peroxide decomposers (secondary antioxidants), which are often used in higher temperature applications.

Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer

Hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) are important stabilizers for long-term thermal protection of polymers, and are very effective in inhibiting polymer degradation caused by free radicals at medium and low temperatures.

Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS) exhibit excellent UV protection by scavenging free radicals generated by photodegradation to prevent polymer degradation. After the HALS chemical scavenges free radicals, it returns to its original structure and repeatedly scavenges free radicals for effective long-term performance.

hals light stabilizer can be classified according to their molecular weight (MW): HALS UV stabilizer with a low molecular weight of approximately 200 to 500 g/mole are generally referred to as low MW HALS, while nor hals stabilizer with a molecular weight of 2000 or higher are referred to as high MW HALS. In general, high molecular weight hals amine stabilizers are more effective than low molecular weight hindered amine stabilizers, and very low molecular weight hindered amine stabilizers do not provide much thermal stability at all.

The high efficiency of tinuvin hals light stabilizer is based on a series of complex free radical scavenging reactions. HALS oxidation is a relatively slow and temperature-dependent reaction. They are not very effective at high temperatures (above about 80°C), HALS are often used in combination with primary and secondary antioxidants, so that the combination can show a good synergistic effect.

For more than 30 years, TINTOLL has been committed to providing innovative high-performance light stabilizer and antioxidant solutions to meet the growing and changing technical needs of the global plastics market.

What Is the Mechanism of Action of Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer?

Hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) do not absorb UV radiation, but inhibit polymer degradation. They slow photochemically induced degradation reactions to some extent similar to antioxidants.

One of the advantages of HALS is that no specific layer thickness or concentration limits are required to guarantee good results. Remarkable plateaus are achieved at relatively low concentrations. The high efficiency and long life of HALS is due to a cyclic process where HALS are regenerated rather than consumed during stabilization.

The mechanism by which hindered amine stabilizers resist thermal oxidation appears to be complex. Due to the regenerative nature of the process, and the generally high molecular weight of the light stabilizers, hindered amine stabilizers can provide extremely long-term thermal and light stability.

The mechanism of HALS involves several different reactions that lead to their stabilization against photooxidation. The radical-scavenging properties of carbon radicals, the reaction of HALS metabolites with peroxyl radicals, and the decomposition of hydroperoxides have been discovered, as follows.
